spider & varicose veins - faq

Are varicose and spider vein treatments covered by insurance?

Most medically necessary procedures are covered by insurance plans. The first step is to schedule an examination with Loop Medical Center physicians. Following an examination, we will suggest the best treatment option. As a part of our service and prior to any treatment, we will check your benefits and only recommend procedures that are covered under your plan. You will be responsible for deductibles and usual copays per your plan benefit.

Varicose and spider veins – Am I a candidate?

Spider veins and varicose veins are easy to diagnose. An examination consists of a review of your medical history, medications, prior procedures, lifestyle habits. This is followed by a physical examination, focusing on the patterns of veins on your legs, feet, or other affected areas. An exam will check for swelling, tender spots, and any changes in skin color. Varicosities that are causing pain, soreness, and muscle fatigue or cramping are then further examined with an ultrasound. This exam does not hurt and takes about an hour to complete. A series of blood vessel measurements will be taken to determine the degree of varicose vein reflux. Based on these measurements, and your symptoms, a determination will be made if your insurance will pay for the treatment. Cosmetic treatments for Spider and Varicose veins are usually not covered by most insurance.

Varicose and spider veins – How are procedures performed?

All procedures at Loop Medical Center are done in a professional, clean manner, using only FDA cleared products, and using Ultrasound guidance to ensure visualization of blood vessels and surrounding structures. Please ask staff members about the specifics of each procedure, or visit Loop Medical Center treatments page.

Varicose and spider veins – Do treatments hurt?

Mild, transient discomfort can be possible, however we take every effort to minimize pain with all procedures. All vascular procedures at Loop Medical Center are done on an outpatient basis, and qualify for either procedural sedation and/or local anesthesia. We will do whatever takes to deliver safe, pain-free, and efficient care.

Varicose and spider veins – How long are procedures?

It depends on each treatment! All minimally invasive interventional procedures, including sclerotherapy, vein ligation, and laser therapy, are outpatient, same-day procedures, done under local anesthesia or IV sedation. The length of each procedure varies and it will be discussed during your evaluation, but all are done under an hour. Some can last less than 5 minutes!

Is there downtime following procedures?

In most instances, patients walk out with a bandaid and compression stockings. Sclerotherapy has been termed “lunch break procedure”, because it can take in some instances as little as 5 minutes.

Are results permanent?

Depending on the procedure, you may need only one treatment. In other instances, several treatments are required to achieve optimal results.

What are my post-treatment restrictions and limitations?

Daily walking, 30 minutes is required to facilitate healing and prevent complications. To maximize benefit, compression stockings should be worn for 2 weeks after sclerotherapy or vein ablation procedure. Daily walking, 30 minutes is encouraged to facilitate healing and prevent complications.
