Anxiety

Anxiety is an emotion characterized by feelings of tension, worried thoughts, and physical changes like increased blood pressure, increased heart rate, trembling, sweating, and dizziness (APA, 2017). People with anxiety disorders usually have recurring intrusive thoughts or concerns, and may avoid certain situations out of worry (APA, 2017). These symptoms can worsen over time and can affect quality of life, interfering with job performance, school work, and relationships (WHO, 2017). Common examples of anxiety disorders are generalized anxiety disorder (GAD), panic disorder (PD), and social anxiety disorder (SAD) (WHO, 2017). These disorders are often treated with cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) and medications such as antidepressants, anxiolytics, and beta-blockers.

Anxiety disorders are the most common mental illness in the United States, affecting 18.1% of the population yearly (WHO, 2017). Women are twice as likely as men to be affected by anxiety disorders (WHO, 2017). Anxiety disorders often co-occur with other disorders such as depression, eating disorders, and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD). Almost half of those diagnosed with depression are also diagnosed with an anxiety disorder. When it comes to treatment of anxiety with Ketamine, there are not many studies available. However, Ketamine has been shown to reduce anxiety symptoms when administered to people with depression.
